How we made it

  1. Start with the background:
Place a sheet of blue paper on the table. We used some paper underneath to protect the surface — you could also use a tray or a washable mat.
  2. Make a snowy handprint:
Paint your toddler’s hand white and press it gently onto the paper to create the base. This will become your snowman family!
  1. Add snow:
Use fingertips or a brush to dot white paint around for falling snow. You can even mix in a bit of glitter glue for a frosty shimmer.

  1. Decorate the snowmen:
Once dry, glue on tiny paper hats, orange carrot noses, and use a marker or black paint for eyes and buttons. My son loved gluing on some stars
  1. Add some fluffy snow:
We glued cotton at the bottom for a cozy snowy base — my toddler loved this part the most!

Why we loved this craft

It’s simple, cheap and seasonal — toddlers get to explore textures (paint, paper, cotton) and cause-and-effect through stamping and gluing. Plus, each handprint snowman is completely unique!

We chatted about winter while working — about snowmen and what they need (like hats and noses!), and what winter looks like outside. It’s a lovely way to make art more meaningful.

Try this next time:

  • Make footprint penguins for a full winter animal theme
  • Turn the snowmen into Christmas cards for grandparents
  • Use silver or blue glitter glue for a starry night sky
  • Try it again with colored paper hats and scarves

Final thoughts

This Fingerpaint Snowman Craft turned out so cute and wintry — the perfect addition to our toddler art wall!
