If you’re a tired mum looking for quality time ideas that don’t trash the house, this rainbow paper chain craft for toddlers is one of those activities that looks simple but actually delivers. It’s calm, hands-on, and turns into a cute wall hanging you can keep up for weeks.

We made this as part of our St. Patrick’s Day crafts series, and honestly — it’s one of my favorite toddler garland ideas so far.

Some days my toddler asks me to craft and I’m already low on energy. I still want to say yes, but I need something calm, meaningful, and not another messy setup.

This rainbow paper chain garland gave us quiet quality time and a cute wall hanging we actually kept up.

🎯 What You’ll Need for This Rainbow Paper Chain Garland Craft

  • Colored paper (rainbow colors)
  • White paper or cardboard (for the cloud)
  • Pink paper (for the cloud cheeks) or pink marker
  • Child-safe scissors
  • Stapler
  • Ribbon (to hang the garland)
  • Black marker

We used simple A4 paper. No special craft supplies needed.

Optional swaps & ideas

  • No stapler → tape (works, but not as sturdy)
  • Younger toddler → pre-cut all strips
  • Want more designs? Add glitter paper, patterns, or different cloud faces

🛠️ How to Set Up the Paper Chain Garland

We prepped everything together, which already made this feel special.

  1. Cut A4 paper into strips. We cut the narrow side but both sides work.
  2. Halve those strips lengthwise — this makes the paper chain narrower and means you need less paper for a longer chain.
  3. Strip size: about 2 cm wide and half an A4 long.

  1. Cut out a cloud shape and add cheeks and a face.

  1. Lay the strips out in rainbow order so your toddler can see the design.

This setup already turns into a learning moment before the craft even starts.

🎯 How to Do the Activity (What It Was Really Like)

My toddler is 29 months old, and I recently introduced the stapler during our Valentine’s paper heart garland. He loved it so much I wanted to try another garland idea soon.

We did this rainbow paper chain wall hanging in one sitting — about 30 minutes.

To be honest, if daddy hadn’t helped with cutting some of the strips, my son wouldn’t have had the patience. And yes — some paper strips look super crooked.

👉 Those crooked strips?
He cut them all by himself. I just held the paper while he used child-safe scissors.

How we worked:

  • I looped the paper strips
  • He stapled (and would not let go of the stapler)
  • We practiced colors the whole time
  • We stapled the chains onto the cloud.

The last 5 minutes he got distracted by daddy, so I finished the garland alone. That’s real toddler crafting.

🧠 What Toddlers Learn With This Rainbow Garland Activity

This is actually a more advanced toddler craft, and that’s why it’s so valuable.

  • Fine motor skills (cutting, stapling, looping)
  • Hand strength (stapler use)
  • Color recognition & sequencing
  • Focus & patience
  • Vocabulary: colors, strips, chain, garland, cloud, ribbon
  • New tools & experiences in a safe way

📌 My Honest Mum Thoughts

This rainbow paper chain garland is not a quick toddler craft. It takes time, help, and patience.

I’d recommend it from about 2.5–3 years up.

But honestly? I love it.
It looks so cute that I’d make this wall hanging just for decoration. It fits perfectly into spring, St. Patrick’s Day, or even a playroom decor idea.

My son actually asked me for this craft. I was tired, but having him on my lap, doing something calm, really cheered me up. This kind of craft slows both of us down.

📍 FAQ – Questions Answered

Is a paper chain garland good for toddlers?

Yes — especially from 2.5 years up. With support, it’s great for fine motor skills, color learning, and patience.

What size paper strips work best for toddler paper chains?

Strips about 2 cm wide and half an A4 long work really well. Narrower strips make the garland look neater and easier to handle. Yet it also increases the difficulty level since you need to get the stapler in.

Can this be used as a wall hanging?

Absolutely. Adding a ribbon turns the paper chain into a sturdy wall hanging or door decoration. I have hung it onto the window
