Looking for a fun and easy fall craft for kids that’s colorful, simple to set up, and keeps toddlers excited? This pom pom painting fall tree craft was a huge hit in our home! My toddler had so much fun dunking pom poms in paint to make autumn leaves — and he’s still talking about it the next day.

This activity is perfect for parents who want something quick and low-stress, but still a little bit magical. It’s also a wonderful autumn craft and fall tree craft for preschoolers, and you can easily adapt it for older kids too.
What You’ll Need For This Fall Tree Craft:

Here’s what we used — I’ve added links in case you’d like to grab them online:
- Thick watercolor paper (or cardstock – see options here)
- Acrylic paint in fall colors like red, yellow, orange, and dark green (starter set here)
- Pom poms in different sizes (similar to these)
- Clamps / clothespins for holding pom poms (that’s really optional)
- Plastic table cover or foil (I just used an empty plastic bag)
- Small plastic container (I reused a clean takeout container)
- Tape to secure the table cover
- And a clean towel/ rag for my toddler. I used another clamp to close it so he wouldn’t get dirty.

How We Made Our Pom Pom Fall Tree 🍁
- Set up the space
I covered our table with a big sheet of plastic foil (that I got from an empty trash bag) and taped it down. This made cleanup so much easier. - Prep the tree trunk
On thick watercolor paper, I drew a simple tree trunk and no branches. I messed those up so you’ll get a free printable below. I used a marker. Nothing fancy — just enough for my toddler to know where the leaves should go.

- Paint setup
I poured a few dots of acrylic paint into a leftover plastic food container. We used fall colors: red, orange, yellow, and dark green. I didn’t add them all at once.

- Show & play
I clipped a pom pom into a clamp (you can also use clothespins) and showed my toddler how to dip it in paint and stamp it onto the paper. Pro tip: I turned the paper upside down because he was only stamping near himself, and I wanted him to make “leaves” at the top of the tree. At some point we gave up the clamp.

- Toddler magic ✨
Once he got the hang of it, he went wild — mixing colors, stamping everywhere, and laughing every time the pom pom squished onto the paper. We used two sizes of pom poms for extra texture, and the result was a beautiful fall tree craft full of bright, textured “leaves.”
The Best Part 🍂
He was so proud of his artwork. He showed it to his dad, his aunt, and basically anyone who would (or wouldn’t) look! The next day, he was still talking about “dunking the pom poms.” For me, that’s the real win — when a craft becomes a memory.

Why We Loved This Fall Craft
- Reusable idea – I’ll definitely repeat this in spring with pinks and greens for a blooming tree
- Quick setup & cleanup (thanks, plastic table cover 🙌)
- Great for little hands – no brushes needed
- Perfect sensory activity – dipping, stamping, squishing
- Teaches colors & creativity
