Easy 2-in-1 Nature Heart Craft: Sun Catcher + Threading Activity

heart nature craft

Some days, I wonder what to do with my toddler outdoors…I want something meaningful and not just him “working” alongside me🙃

So we tried this popular, super simple nature heart craft with a little twist — and it actually kept my toddler busy AND turned into the cutest Mother’s Day Gift idea.
It’s probably gonna be gifted to grandma or great grandma <3.

If you need something low-prep, real-life, and calming(ish)… this is it.

🎯 What You’ll Need (Nature Heart Craft for Toddlers)

  • Cardboard (we used an old box – the sturdier the better)
  • cutter (highly recommend) – you can use scissors
  • Tape (for the sticky sun catcher part) or contact paper
  • Yarn/string
  • Flowers, leaves, grass (whatever you can find outside 🌿)

💡 Real mum tip:
It was still really early in the year when we went out, so I thought we wouldn’t find much… but we actually found more than expected.

Optional swaps:

  • No flowers → use tissue paper or just collect leaves, grass, dirt
  • Younger toddler → skip threading, just stick

🛠️ How to Set Up (Easy Toddler Nature Activity)

  1. Cut out a heart shape from cardboard. You’ll get the suncatcher frame and the heart for threading in one go. (That’s why I rec a cutter!)
  2. Add tape to the heart frame so it’s sticky
  3. Take the second heart and cut small slits into the sides.
  4. Thread some yarn through those. Prep done.
  5. Put everything outside and let your toddler take over

💡 This took me maybe 10 minutes max — super simple.

👉 Important:
I really recommend using a cutter, you’ll only get one usable piece. With a cutter you get both hearts = 2 crafts in one prep session.

🎯 How to Do This Nature Heart Craft with Toddlers

So… in reality, it didn’t start as planned 😆

At first, he was WAY more excited about:

  • playing with mud
  • picking petals off daisies

Which… honestly,expected.

Then something surprised me —
he started adding earth onto the sticky tape. I did NOT expect that.

Once he got into “collecting mode,” he:

  • picked little daisies
  • pressed them onto the heart
  • and got really focused on filling it up

The threading part?
Less interesting 😅

He was actually more into:
👉 taking the flowers OUT again after I threaded them

Which turned it into a whole different activity — but still great for fine motor.

💡 And the best part?
We were outside, in mud clothes, so it was basically zero stress mess-wise.

🧠 What Toddlers Learn (Nature Craft Benefits)

Even though it felt like just playing… there’s a lot happening:

  • Fine motor skills (grabbing petals, threading, pulling out)
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Sensory play (mud, flowers, textures)
  • Focus & curiosity

🗣️ New words we used:

  • petals
  • stem
  • earth
  • sticky
  • soft

📌 My Honest Thoughts (Real Mum Review)

I LOVE activities like this because they adapt to your toddler.

✔ super low prep (10 min max)
✔ outside = low mess
✔ turned into quality time without forcing anything

But also:

  • he didn’t use it the “intended” way 😆
  • threading wasn’t the main highlight
  • and yes… some flowers got completely destroyed. He thought he can plant daisies with petals.

Still — it turned into such a sweet little craft.

👉 Honestly?
This would be such a cute Mother’s Day gift.

I usually just get a bouquet of wildflowers…
but this is perfect if you don’t find that many.
