Ever need a quiet activity your toddler can do next to you while you chat, cook, or clean — without a huge mess? I tried this ladybug fine motor activity with my 28-month-old and he stayed focused and entertained while we talked.

In this post, I’ll share step-by-step instructions, materials list, what your child is learning, and tips to make it even easier.

Table Of Contents

🎯 What You’ll Need

  • Small cardboard box
  • Cotton swabs / ear swipes
  • Paint (red + black)
  • A pen, skewer, or scissors to poke holes

💡 I prepped this in about 5 minutes — perfect for those moments between tasks.

🛠️ How to Set Up

  1. Choose your cardboard box. Don’t glue or anything. It’ll be opened a lot.

  1. Paint a simple ladybug on it — round body, head, legs.
  2. Poke holes for the ladybugs dots after the paint has dried. Don’t make them too small I used a sewing needle.

  1. Place cotton swabs next to the box and invite your toddler to play. I painted the tips black for the dots.

💡 He played while I was chatting with my mum — honestly I saw something similar on Insta and thought rubbish no toddler plays with this. So, obviously I had to test it.

🎯 How to Play / Do the Activity

Once it was ready, my 28-month-old climbed onto my lap, grabbed a cotton swab, and started talking about the ladybug. He loved pushing the swabs through the holes — even when they didn’t work the first time. I made the holes too small.

At one point he added a little “light” on top of the box and closed the holes so the light wouldn’t shine through — all by himself!

He tried:

  • pushing the swabs through from the other side (that didn’t work 😆)
  • trying different objects in the holes – to my mums distress.
  • chatting non-stop while playing

👉 This activity was independent, calm, and engaging — and best of all I got to actually talk with my mum while he played.

🧠 What They’re Learning Here

This ladiesbug activity supports:

  • Fine motor skills — strengthening finger control
  • Hand-eye coordination — matching swab to hole
  • Problem-solving — trying different ways to make things fit
  • Concentration & focus

Even though it looks simple, it’s powerful learning through play — and I as a mum love “learning benefits” like these! What I like even more. Him focused so I have 5 minutes off.

I mean I love him to the moon and the stars. My partner isn’t around so even the toilet is a shared experience… 5 minutes off are golden.

📌 My Honest Thoughts / Personal Experience

At first I didn’t know if he’d care — but once he started pushing the swabs through the holes, he stayed engaged longer than expected. He even invented his own little twist (the “light idea” 😄), which made me laugh.

I love that this play feels calm, not chaotic. No screens, no big setup, no mess — just simple play that keeps his little brain busy while I got to chat.

📍 FAQ / Tips

Q: What age is this great for?
A: 24 months – 3.5 years, depending on how you adapt the holes.

Q: How do I avoid a huge mess?
A: Use only cotton swabs — no pom poms or beads that roll everywhere.

Q: Can I reuse this again?
A: Yes! Just close and store it for next time.
