Autumn is one of my favorite seasons to slow down and get creative with my little one. 🍁 The colors, the crisp air, the crunchy leaves – everything feels magical. This week, my toddler and I tried a simple fall leaf watercolor painting activity, and it turned into such a beautiful piece of art (and a lovely memory!).
Not only is this project fun, but it also helps toddlers explore colors, textures, and nature. And the best part? It’s super easy to set up and budget-friendly!
Why This Fall Leaf Art is Perfect for Your Toddler
- Super simple to set up – No super expensive materials.
- Encourages creativity – Watercolor paints let kids experiment freely without pressure.
- Builds fine motor skills – From holding the paintbrush to splattering colors.
- Nature connection – We used real leaves from our walk to make it more special.
- Sensory fun – Mixing colors, feeling the leaves, and watching paint flow is pure magic for little ones.

We did this with his dad and my son loved the watercolors. Ok dad showed him how to sprinkle color onto the paper and haha my mum heart… He had a blast tho.

What You’ll Need For the Autumn Watercolor Painting
- Watercolor paper – Thick enough to handle all the splashes and some soaking (shop it one Amazon – they don’t have to be super expensive)
- Watercolor paint set – Non-toxic and toddler-friendly (this is the one every german gets at elementary school)
- Paintbrushes – A mix of thick and thin for variety (shop here)
- Real fall leaves – Pick them up during your nature walk!
- Cup of water – For rinsing brushes
- Old t-shirt or art smock – To protect clothes ok we went without a shirt.

Step-by-Step Instructions
- Go on a Nature Walk
Head outside with your toddler and collect a few interesting leaves. Look for different shapes, sizes, and colors. This is a great way to talk about seasons, textures, and nature. Ours dried so fast in the Korean heat… - Set Up Your Painting Station
Lay out your watercolor paper, paints, brushes, and a water cup. I recommend doing this on a wipeable table or using a plastic tablecloth. - Explore Colors
Let your toddler dip the brush in water, then into the paint. Encourage them to mix colors and see what happens. - Add the Leaf
Place a real leaf on the paper. Your child can paint around it, on top of it, or splatter paint to create fun patterns. - Splatter Time!
Show your toddler how to tap the brush gently for splatters. This step always gets giggles! - Let It Dry
Once finished, carefully remove the leaf and admire the print it leaves behind. You can also keep the painted leaf as part of the artwork.

Tips for Success
- Use a large sheet of watercolor paper so your child has plenty of space.
- Don’t let dad teach the splatter.
- Don’t aim for perfection – It won’t happen anyways.
- Keep a rag close.
- If your toddler is too young for brushes, let them use sponges or fingers.
How to Display the Finished Art
We love hanging toddler art on the fridge, but this one is frame-worthy! You could also take a photo of the painting and turn it into fall greeting cards for grandparents.
