Yesterday, my toddler and I went on a little adventure outdoors — we collected pine cones for a fun nature craft. What started as a simple idea turned into a whole family of pine cone hedgehogs, each with their own personality. One ended up looking like an old gramma with a little too much playdough!
This activity is easy, mess-friendly, and combines nature play with creativity — perfect for toddlers who love collecting treasures outside.
What You Need For This Pinecone Hedgehog
- Pinecones (different shapes and sizes)
- Playdough (we mixed white + yellow for a soft hedgehog color)
- Black marker or pen for eyes and mouth
- Optional: leaves, acorns, or tiny nature finds for decorations

How We Made Our Hedgehog Fall Craft
- Collecting pinecones – We went for a walk and picked up a basket of pinecones. My son loved searching the ground and shouting when he found one.
- Shaping the snout – I showed him how to roll the playdough into a cone shape. This becomes the hedgehog’s nose.
- Adding the feet – We rolled 4 tiny playdough balls for the legs.
- Attaching playdough to pinecones – We pressed the cone-shaped snout onto the pinecone base and added the feet.
Ok I had to help quite a bit lol.

- Details & faces – With a black pen, we drew tiny eyes and a smile.
- Creative extras – My toddler painted one pinecone really hard, and another got a leaf on top like a hat.
