Sometimes toddlers just want to do something right now, and there’s no time for complicated setups.
This balloon painting lion craft for toddlers took maybe 2 minutes to set up and about 10–15 minutes to do — perfect for those low-energy days when you still want a little creative time together.
We tried it at the start of our safari animal week, and it turned into a cute little lion painting experiment.

🦁 What You’ll Need for This Balloon Painting Lion Craft
Very simple supplies.
- white paper
- yellow or orange washable paint
- plastic bag (blown up like a balloon)
- black marker for the lion face
- FREE LION PRINTABLE BELOW

Optional swaps:
- real balloon instead of a plastic bag
- paper plate base
- cardboard for sturdier painting
One thing I learned during this activity:
washable paint worked way better than watercolor.
The watercolor was too thin and didn’t create those nice stamped textures.
🛠️ How to Set Up This Lion Craft for Toddlers
- Draw a simple lion face on paper.
- Pour paint onto a palette.
- Blow up a plastic bag and twist the end to keep the air inside.
- Dip the “balloon” lightly into paint.
- Let your toddler stamp around the lion to create the mane.
We did struggle a bit keeping the air inside the bag 😅 but it still worked.

🎨 How We Did the Balloon Painting Lion Craft
I had actually seen those viral plastic bag flower crafts online, so I thought this might turn out something like that.
But honestly it looked more like a classic balloon stamping craft.
My toddler is 2.5, and he pressed the plastic bag pretty hard into the paint. Instead of stamping mostly around the lion’s face… he stamped right over it too.
In hindsight I probably should have covered the face area during the stamping part.
At first he looked at the drawing and said it looked like a teddy bear, which honestly made me laugh.
The activity itself didn’t last super long — maybe 10 to 15 minutes. Definitely not one of our longest focused crafts.
When I asked him if he liked it, he said yes, although I’m not totally convinced he loved it as much as some of our other activities 😆
Still, it was a nice simple start to our safari animal week.

Even short art activities like this help toddlers develop important skills. Plus some calm down cuddle time is also great.

🦁 My Honest Thoughts About This Craft
This was definitely a very simple toddler craft.
It’s not a huge project, and the activity time was pretty short, but sometimes that’s exactly what works best for toddlers or mummy lol. After some one on one time he is much happier to play alone.
A few things I would do differently next time:
- use washable paint from the start instead of watercolor
- offer more color choices
- maybe cover the lion face while stamping
- Use a balloon since the flower part didn’t work anyways.
Even though it was quick, it was still a nice little creative moment together — and a fun way to start our safari animal activities.

❓ FAQ – Balloon Painting Lion Craft
What age is this lion craft good for?
This craft works best for ages 2+ depending on how much help they need.
Can you use a balloon instead of a plastic bag?
Yes, a balloon works great for stamping paint patterns.
We used a plastic bag because I thought I can make a flower mane.
Why use paint instead of watercolor?
Watercolor tends to be too thin for stamping techniques.
Thicker washable paint creates better textures.
