Need a super simple indoor toddler craft when you’re honestly too tired to plan anything big?
Last week it suddenly got cold and rainy again, we were stuck inside, and my 2.5-year-old was bored and literally asked me to craft with him. I almost said no (last weeks before baby arrives… walking up stairs feels like Mount Everest right now 😅), but this fish suncatcher craft for toddlers ended up being the perfect low-energy activity for both of us.

🎯 What You’ll Need for This Fish Suncatcher Craft for Toddlers
- recycled cardboard
- paint or markers for the fish frame
- clear tape (or contact paper – honestly, better if you have it)
- stickers
- sequins / transparent craft circles
- sparkly star sequins
- scissors
💡 What we used
I reused recycled cardboard, cut a fish shape, and painted it.
Instead of contact paper I just used clear tape, which worked… but if I’m honest I wish I had contact paper because it would have been easier.

Optional swaps
- tissue paper pieces
- cellophane
- foam stickers
🛠️ How to Set Up the Fish Suncatcher Craft
- Cut a fish shape frame from cardboard.
- Paint or color the fish frame. Let it dry. (I just used a marker)
- Add clear tape across the opening to create a sticky surface. Or better contact paper.
- Put stickers and sequins on the table.
- Let your toddler decorate the fish.
The setup really took me maybe 5 minutes.
And the activity lasted around 20 minutes, which for a toddler craft honestly felt perfect.
🎯 How to Do This Fish Suncatcher Craft With Your Toddler
When everything was ready I gave him stars, stickers or the shiny see-through circles? I forgot what they are called.
He used everything of course 😄We’ve used crayons before for this heart suncatcher and we’ve used see-through paper for this clover suncatcher, before so this one was a bit different.
So he started placing:
- sparkly star sequins
- transparent circle sequins
- stickers
All by himself.
He kept sticking them, moving them again, thinking about where they should go.
And I just sat next to him, helping a little and mostly watching.
Those quiet crafting moments are honestly the best.
Especially right now because he’s 2.5 and suddenly cuddles less and less. So sitting together crafting and leaning on me a little… I’ll take that.
When we finished we put the fish in the window and the light coming through the sequins looked really pretty.

🧠 What Toddlers Learn From This Fish Suncatcher Craft for Toddlers
Even though this is a super simple activity, toddlers practice a lot of skills.
Fine Motor Skills
Picking up small sequins helps strengthen the pincer grasp.
Focus & Patience
My son kept adjusting the decorations until it looked “right”.
Creativity & Decision Making
He decided where every piece should go.
Vocabulary
We practiced words like
- fish
- ocean
- shiny
- transparent
- sticky
These little moments of talking during play build language skills naturally.
📌 My Honest Mum Thoughts
I really almost didn’t set this up.
Those last weeks before baby arrives are no joke. Energy is low and even small things feel like a lot.
But my toddler was bored and asked to craft.
So I thought… ok let’s try something super simple.
He stayed busy for about 20 minutes, completely focused, and I got a sweet quiet moment with him before our world changes again when baby arrives.
Also… crafting cuddles are the best kind.

📍 FAQ About Fish Suncatcher Crafts
What age is this fish suncatcher craft good for?
Around 2+ years old. I don’t like giving age limits actually. Each toddler is different and actually you can do this craft till you are 99+ lol.
Do you need contact paper for a suncatcher craft?
Contact paper works best.
But if you don’t have any (like me 😅), clear tape also works to create a sticky surface.
What materials work best inside the suncatcher?
Anything colorful and slightly transparent works well:
- sequins
- tissue paper
- cellophane
- transparent stickers
