This pipette coloring fish craft turned into the cutest little ocean craft and color learning activity for my 2.5-year-old this week, while we practiced colors together.
He knows a few colors already… but green and blue? Always get mixed up a lot over here.

🎯 What You’ll Need for This Pipette Coloring Fish Craft
- pipettes or droppers
- cotton pads
- washable paint mixed with water
- small cups or jars
- cardboard for the fish base
- glue
- I used some color and a black edding to make the fish
Optional swaps:
- thick paper towels instead of cotton pads
- watercolor paints
- thick craft paper instead of cardboard
We actually used an old frozen pizza box for the base and it worked perfect. It soaked up the extra water really well and didn’t melt within seconds.

🛠️ How to Set Up This Pipette Coloring Fish Craft
This setup was super simple.
- I cut open the pizza box cardboard.
- I drew a big fish outline on it. Drew the outline and colored it a bit.
- My toddler helped glue cotton pads inside the fish shape.
- Then I mixed washable paint with water in little cups.
- Finally I placed a pipette into each color. (My toddler chose them)
Prep around 10 minutes.

🎯 How to Do the Pipette Coloring Fish Craft
At first my son just watched me squeeze the pipette once.
And then… he tried it himself.
Honestly he got the hang of it really fast.
At the beginning he squeezed hard and always emptied the whole pipette at once 😆
But after a bit he started doing single drops slowly which was actually really cool to watch.
Each drop spread through the cotton pads like little color clouds.
And then something funny happened.
He realized that when he added color on top of another color… it changed.
So suddenly he was experimenting.
Blue on red.
Yellow on blue.
Some of the cotton pads got so full of water they couldn’t absorb anymore, and when he squeezed again the color sprayed a tiny bit.
Which obviously he thought was hilarious.
At one point he started saying:
“Give me green!”
“Now blue!”
So we practiced color names together while he painted the fish.
By the end he wanted to make more fish… like a whole fish family. Especially grandpa fish lol.

📌 My Honest Thoughts
This activity turned out way better than I expected.
Once he figured out the pipette squeezing it became super engaging.
Also the cotton absorbs most of the water, so even though it looks messy it actually wasn’t that bad to clean up. We had some tissue on the side. That was mostly needed for my own spills lol.
Next time we might try:
- making different sea animals
- creating a big ocean scene
- adding more fish family members 😄
