So in our mum-child group we tried this toddler heart wind chime craft, and it actually turned into the sweetest little Mother’s Day keepsake.
Sometimes I just want one simple craft with my toddler that turns into something cute, not something that ends up in the bin two days later.
My son is 2.5 years old and did most of it himself since he was one of the oldest kids there. At the beginning I even had two toddlers on my arms while another mum was busy… which honestly felt like a little preview of life with two kids soon 😅

🎯 What You’ll Need for This Toddler Heart Wind Chime Craft
We used this exact craft kit from Amazon which already had everything prepared: It had the perfect amount for our whole group.

That honestly made prep super fast — like 2 minutes.
Materials in the kit:
- Wooden heart frames with holes. We got the second one with a second heart.
- Small metal wind chimes
- String for hanging
- Ribbon
- Stick-on gems
- Paint markers (which we didn’t use).
We also used these cute and short toddler paint brushes like from Amazon. You can use any paint brushes you have at home.
Optional tip:
If you want the strings to look extra neat you could also use a hot glue gun instead of threading, but we just tied them.
💡 What I liked most:
Everything was already prepped, so all we had to do was grab the paints and start.
🛠️ How to Set Up This Toddler Heart Wind Chime Craft
1️⃣ First paint the wooden heart frame with acrylic paint.
We used acrylic paint so we can hang it outside later.
Let it dry and then paint the other side.
Small tip I noticed:
The color from one side leaks through the holes, so I’d recommend:
- letting it dry completely
- putting a kitchen towel underneath to absorb extra paint
But honestly… the little color mix actually looked nice. My son used yellow and red and it blended a bit which made it look even cooler.

2️⃣ Thread the ribbon through the top hole so it can hang later.
3️⃣ Attach the strings to the bottom holes.
4️⃣ Tie the metal chimes to the strings and attach the middle heart.
5️⃣ Let your toddler decorate the heart with gems.
6️⃣ Hang it somewhere and watch your toddler test the sound about 100 times 😅
We actually did the tying last, because it took the longest.
That way my son stayed busy painting and decorating while I worked on the strings… otherwise toddler patience disappears pretty fast.
🎯 How Toddlers Play With the Heart Wind Chime Craft
This part was honestly the funniest.
The second my son saw the little metal chimes hanging… instant curiosity mode activated.
He also tried to pull some of the gems back off after sticking them on 😆
At one point he grabbed the gem sheet and just started:
- placing every flower gem he could find
- filling almost the whole heart
- then going back for the leftovers
So the heart ended up very full of gems, but honestly I love it because it looks like a toddler actually made it.
While I was tying the chimes he also:
- threaded some chimes onto the paint brush
- cut up some newspaper
- experimented with the paint
Toddlers really turn everything into their own little discovery play. And once we hung it up he kept pushing it to hear the sound.

🧠 What Toddlers Learn With This Toddler Heart Wind Chime Craft
Even though it feels like a simple craft, toddlers practice a lot of skills.
Fine Motor Skills
Placing gems and threading pieces helps develop the pincer grasp.
Hand-Eye Coordination
They practice placing decorations carefully.
Cause and Effect
When they move the wind chime it creates sound.
Vocabulary
This craft is great for introducing new words like:
- wind chime
- metal
- hanging
- sound
- swing
- gentle
Toddlers learn words much faster when they can touch the object while hearing the word.

📌 My Honest Thoughts (Real Mum Review)
I actually really liked this craft because you can keep it afterwards.
I spend a lot of time in the garden, so hanging something my son made outside feels really special.
Some toddler crafts honestly end up as throw-away pieces, but this one works as:
- a decoration
- a Mother’s Day gift
- or even a Grandma gift ❤️
What worked well:
✔ decorating with gems (toddlers LOVE shiny things)
✔ quick prep because everything was ready
✔ cute keepsake
What I would change next time:
Plan a little more time.
Tying the threads while the paint was still slightly wet was a bit stressful.
But overall it’s one of those crafts you actually keep for years.
Little toddler hands made it 🥹
