This Finger Painting Easter Craft… Made My Toddler Go Wild

easy easter craft for 2 year old sensory play

Sometimes toddlers wake up and choose chaos 😅 mine was in full cheeky mode that day, and I just needed something that lets him be messy without destroying the house.

We hadn’t crafted in a while and I know he LOVES finger paint so we made this finger painting easter craft for toddlers. If your 2 year old has big energy and tiny attention span — this works.

🎯 Materials for This Easy Toddler Easter Craft

  • cardboard (we used recycled packaging)
  • washable finger paint
  • glue (needed to attach shapes)
  • extra cardboard shapes for decorating
  • spoon + cotton swabs (Ohrenstäbchen)
  • table mat or tray

💡 I prepped the egg base and shapes ahead of time.
💡 Want less mess → use crayons instead of paint.

🛠️ How to Set Up This Easter Activity at Home

  1. Cut a large cardboard easter egg.
  2. Prepare extra cardboard shapes for decoration.
  3. Place paint, tools and egg on a protected surface.
  4. Invite toddler and let them explore freely.
  5. Glue shapes on once painting is done.

I stayed nearby and we crafted together because… cheeky energy level: high 😅Next time I’d use a bigger table mat.

🎨 Finger Painting Easter Craft for Toddlers — How We Did It

This craft was actually a side activity while we worked on our cherry tree craft. I just wanted him to pour out all that naughty energy safely.

He started with fingers first — touching, mixing, using it as handwash. Just exploring textures. Then he grabbed a spoon, dipped it into the paint and started pounding the egg like a tiny drummer 😂 same thing with the cotton swabs. Definitely not calm energy… but very focused energy. Luckily he stayed on the image.

We crafted together — I got my fingers messy too. For me that’s real quality time. But I try not to do too much so his creativity stays his.

He stayed engaged about 15 minutes which is honestly a win here. After that we went outside to burn off the remaining energy.

Is it normal that 30 month olds suddenly become extra cheeky?? Asking for science lol.

🧠 Fine Motor Skills Toddlers Learn From This Craft

  • fine motor strength (pressing, tapping, gripping tools)
  • sensory processing (texture, resistance, movement)
  • hand-eye coordination
  • cause and effect learning
  • creativity + decision making
  • vocabulary: paint, smooth, sticky, press, color

This is messy play with real developmental value.

📌 Why This Cardboard Easter Egg Craft Works (My Honest Mum Take)

This activity hit the sweet spot between messy and manageable. The finger paint made it exciting but the cardboard base kept everything contained. My toddler stayed focused till the end.

He peeled of the shapes at first so I secretly reattached them. The shapes made the egg look surprisingly fancy.

Next time:
✔ bigger table mat
✔ prep extra shapes
✔ maybe start outside

I was worried about paint everywhere but honestly supervision solved most of it.

📍 FAQ

What easter crafts are good for 2 year olds?

Simple sensory crafts like finger painting, cardboard decorating, sticker art and texture play work best because toddlers learn through exploration not perfection.

How do you do finger painting with toddlers without huge mess?

Use washable paint, protect the surface, keep materials simple and stay nearby. Or switch to crayons for low mess version.

Are messy crafts good for toddler development?

Yes. Messy sensory play supports brain development, motor skills, creativity and emotional expression. It’s learning through experience.
