Easy Toilet Paper Roll Chick Craft for Toddlers (A Fun Easter Activity)

Chick Craft Toilet Paper Roll Activity

I had the green felt grass leftover from our sheep craft, so I reused it for this one. I’m still slowly introducing new animals to my son, and this time it was a baby chick.
He’s 29 months old, doesn’t love touching messy things, but lately he does enjoy coloring with me — so this felt like a good fit.

We do crafts mostly for fun, learning, and honestly… cute decoration too 😄

🎯 What You’ll Need for This Toilet Paper Roll Chick Craft

  • Empty toilet paper roll
  • Yellow acrylic paint or yellow paper (less messy)
  • Orange paint or marker (for the beak)
  • Googly eyes
  • Green felt (optional, for grass)
  • Paper puncher (flowers, butterflies, shapes)
  • Glue

We painted the roll with acrylic paint. Colored paper would work just as well and is definitely less messy.

Optional swaps:

  • No felt? → Just draw grass
  • No puncher? → Stickers or drawn flowers
  • Mess-sensitive toddler? → Use paper instead of paint

🛠️ How to Set Up (Zero Prep)

There was honestly no prep time here. We did everything together.

  1. Grab a toilet paper roll and paint it yellow (or wrap it in paper).
  2. Let it dry — we waited and did this muddy pig sensory bin instead.
  3. Glue the felt grass around the bottom.

💡 We didn’t fold the chick head at all, but you can fold the top inward if you like that look.

🎯 How the Activity Went for Us

As expected, we got a bit stuck on the puncher 😅
My son is very into punching colored paper right now, so we made way more flowers and butterflies than would ever fit on one chick.

That’s how we ended up with a whole group of toilet paper roll friends.

He glued, punched, chose colors, and played with the finished chicks afterward. The butterflies with wings were clearly his favorite — more than the chick itself — but the whole activity kept him engaged for about 30 minutes, which is a win here.

🧠 What Toddlers Learn With This Chick Craft

  • Fine motor skills (gluing, punching, painting)
  • Focus & calm time
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Animal vocabulary: chick, beak, wings, grass
  • New tools: puncher, glue, paint brush
  • Creativity & choice-making

Crafts like this are great for slowing things down and giving toddlers a calm, intentional activity.

📌 My Honest Thoughts

I would make this again. It’s cute, simple, and reusable as decoration or toy.
It wasn’t his most loved craft ever, but it did exactly what I wanted it to do: calm focus, learning, and shared time together.

If your child loves characters with wings, adding more butterflies or birds might make it even more exciting.

I’d say this is best for 2+ years, especially if you want them involved in every step.
