Easy Fingerprint Rainbow Craft for Toddlers (Free Template)

toddler finger painting rainbow activity at home

I was looking for something cute, quick, and calming to do with my toddler — no big setup, no giant mess — and rainbows are always a win around St Patrick’s Day and spring.

This fingerprint rainbow craft for toddlers was all of those things. It’s one fingerpaint activity that uses focus, so it takes some time, but is still easy.

We don’t all craft every day — but when we do, it has to be worth the effort 😅

🎯 What You’ll Need for This Fingerprint Rainbow Craft for Toddlers

  • White paper or cardstock
  • Washable kids paint (red, yellow, blue are enough)
  • Wet wipes / damp cloth (VERY important)
  • A placemat or silicone mat
  • High chair

I would never finger paint on the floor again — way too messy. This is 100% a high chair activity in our house.

What I don’t recommend

  • ❌ Stamp pads (too intense + messy for toddlers)
  • ❌ Doing this on the floor
  • ❌ Too many colors at once, not really neccessary for smaller ones. Plus you can mix the colors yourself, no need to buy extra.

Optional

  • Free printable rainbow template (I’ll share this below — it helps a LOT)

🛠️ How to Set Up (2–3 Minutes, Really)

  1. Put your toddler in the high chair.
  2. Place the mat on the tray and paper on top.
  3. Add small dots of paint (not too much). You can use a color mixing tray.
  4. Keep wipes right next to you.
  5. Sit your toddler on your lap if they like closeness (mine does).

Prep time: 2–3 minutes max
Cleanup: mostly hands + mat

🎯 How We Did This Fingerprint Rainbow Activity

I pre-drew soft rainbow guide circles on the paper so he could follow the shape — without that, it’s honestly really hard for toddlers. Otherwise they’ll just dot everywhere (which is also fun, but not a rainbow 😄).

He sat on my lap while we painted. I love that closeness, and it also means I can gently stop tiny hands from touching everything in sight.

We worked one color at a time, and here’s the part I loved most:
👉 We mixed colors directly on his finger.

Red + yellow → orange
Blue + yellow → green

He saw the color change on his finger, which turned this into a color teaching exercise, not just art. I kept a wet wipe nearby and cleaned his finger between colors — otherwise everything turns brown fast.

After the rainbow was done, we used the leftover paint for free painting, which felt like a perfect creative release.

🧠 What Toddlers Are Learning With Fingerprint Painting

This activity looks simple, but it’s powerful:

  • Fine motor skills – finger control & pressure
  • Color recognition & mixing – early science learning
  • Cause & effect – “when I mix, it changes”
  • Focus & patience – following a shape
  • Vocabulary – color names, “mix,” “new color,” “rainbow”

Is finger painting good for toddlers?

Yes — it’s sensory play, creative expression, and early STEM all in one. Studies show sensory play supports brain development, especially in the early years.

And honestly? Toddlers LOVE finger paint. At least mine absolutely does.

📌 My Honest Mum Thoughts

What worked really well:

  • High chair setup = controlled mess
  • Pre-drawn rainbow = less frustration
  • Sitting on my lap = calmer + connected
  • Wet wipes nearby = colors stay clean

What to know:

  • Without guidance, he would’ve dotted the whole page
  • I’d say this is best for 2.5 years and up if you want an actual rainbow
  • Younger toddlers can still do it — just without expectations

It felt calm, intentional, and not overwhelming. That’s a win.
