Looking for a fun, messy, and super cute Halloween activity to do with your toddler? This easy spider craft for toddlers ticks all the boxes — quick to set up, engaging for little hands, and it doubles as a spooky decoration for fall. All you need is a paper plate, some paint, pom poms, and a little imagination.

And let me tell you — it didn’t even get that messy.

What You’ll Need For The Spider Craft

  • White paper plates (like these on Amazon)
  • Black paint or watercolor
  • Crayons (optional for the eyes or for painting the spider body)
  • Grey pom poms (for the spider’s big googly eyes)
  • Black pen or marker (to draw pupils)
  • Glue

How We Made the Spider Paper Plate Craft

  1. Paint the Spider Shape
I started by painting a simple spider shape on one of the plates. Of course my toddler had to try and help lol. Don’t worry about perfection — a big round body with legs coming out is more than enough to look spidery.
  1. I gave him an extra plate and colors to “paint” his own “spider” after his help.

  1. Add the Eyes
We glued on two big grey pom poms as eyes. To give them personality, I drew little pupils with a black pen. This made our spider looked extra cute instead of scary.
  1. Toddler’s Turn – Crayon Scribbles & Paint Play
While I was painting the spider, my toddler worked on his own plate. First, he scribbled with crayons (he loved that freedom!). Then he grabbed the glue and added pom poms by himself —Tadaa his piece of art <3 Proud Mama here.

Here is how the spider turned out. It was hard to keep that eyes on that spider.

Displaying Your Spooky Creation

Once everything dried, we hung the plates up as Halloween decorations. They look so cheerful (and a little spooky) on the wall — a perfect toddler-made addition to our fall craft collection.

This activity is simple enough for young kids, encourages creativity, and leaves you with seasonal décor that actually feels personal. Plus, it’s a nice way to spend quality time together.

Parent tip: If your little one is still very young, let them focus on scribbling, painting, and gluing while you handle the spider outline. That way, you get something recognizable while they get the joy of messy play.

  • Quick setup (no fancy supplies needed)
  • Great for motor skills (painting, gluing, coloring)
  • Doubles as Halloween decoration
