Bubble bubble. Pop. Pop. Bubble. Bubble. Pop.
I love bubble foam play and so does my toddler <3. Lucky me. If your toddler is a soap-loving little whirlwind like mine, you need to try this!

Foam play is one of our absolute favorite activities. It’s super easy to set up, fast to clean, and your toddler will have a blast for a good 30+ minutes (hello, warm coffee). We started this when my son was just 9 months old, and he’s now two and still obsessed.
Here’s everything you need to know about how to make foam for kids, including bubble foam without a mixer, safe products to use, and some real-mum tips from me.

What You Need (Materials List)
- Baby shampoo or gentle soap (We use Weleda Shampoo – it smells so good and doesn’t sting!) I am totally in love with this series.
- Water
- Hand mixer or a plastic bottle with lid (yes really!). Of course you can also use a stand mixer. I use a simple push down mixer like this. It takes a while, but my son looooves to help mix. 🙂
- Optional: toys, cars, animals, towels, scoops, cups
- Optional: food coloring (Read below before going wild!)

How to Make Soap Foam with a Mixer (My Go-To)
- Add 2 tbsp baby shampoo and about 1/4 cup water into a mixing bowl. It depends a lot on the shampoo so you can simply add more if it’s not enough.
- Whip it using a hand mixer or stand mixer until you get stiff foam peaks (just like whipped cream).
- Pour into a shallow bin or tray, (I use flat storage bins like these on Amazon) toss in your toddler’s fav toys, and let them go wild.

Bubble Foam Without a Mixer (The Travel Hack!)
If I’m on the go or don’t have my mixer, I just grab an empty plastic water bottle, add soap + water, and shake it like a crazy person. You’ll get a lot of foam fast and can just squish it out into a bin. Super easy. Plus my toddler loves to squish the bottle.

Foam Play Ideas (How to Play With Playfoam)
- Toy Wash Station: Add cars, trucks, animals and a mini towel = boom, it’s bath time.
- Color Hunt: Add safe food coloring and ask your toddler to scoop only “red” foam.
- Scoop and Sort: Use cups or spoons to transfer foam from one bowl to another.
- Foam Construction Site: Add diggers and trucks (like in our photo below) and let them scoop and load.
- Foam Table Fun: Spread foam out on a baking tray or small table and let your toddler use fingers or paintbrushes to draw shapes, letters, or patterns.
- Animal Rescue: Hide small animals under the foam bubbles and ask your toddler to “rescue” them.
- Bubble Foam Bakery: Give your toddler measuring cups and mixing bowls to make “cakes” or “ice cream” from foam. Pretend play + sensory fun = win!
- Foam Road Cleaning: Line up toy cars and “drive” them through the foam bubbles on a tray road.
- Sink the Boat: Use small containers or paper boats and see how much foam it takes to sink them.
- Foam Kitchen: Add measuring s
- poons, a ladle, and bowls to make a pretend foam soup kitchen.

Color Warning ⚠️ (Let Me Be Honest)
I used food color once to make blue foam and honestly… we looked like Smurfs. 😅 The color did stain our hands for a day. I did probably add too much food color. It was easy-ish to wash off clothes and surfaces, but if you’re picky, skip the color or use just 1 tiny drop. Many people say it doesn’t stain, but I’d say: test first.
Plus my toddler kept saying “mama wash hand – go off”. It was adorable.
Make Foam Play Taste-Safe!
If you have a toddler who still tastes everything, here’s a baby-safe version:
- Use whipped cream instead of soap.
- Add a little food coloring if you like (use sparingly to avoid stains).
- Serve in a bin or tray just like with foam.
- This version is perfect for learning preschool activities like color mixing or pretend play.
Whipped cream foam is ideal for babies under 1 and for older toddlers who like to nibble everything. You can also try aquafaba (whipped chickpea water) for a dairy-free, taste-safe option!
Why Foam Play is Toddler Gold
- It’s sensory heaven (hello bubbles, squish, and splash!)
- It supports fine motor skills (scooping, grabbing, pouring)
- It can be combined with pretend play (like a car wash or toy rescue)
- You can make it baby-safe from day one
- It is a perfect travel toy!
- It’s perfect for indoor activities and a great sensory play idea for toddlers

What If I Don’t Want to Make It?
Apparently, you can buy a ready-made foam product from Everyday Joy (Amazon Link) other mums recd it, but honestly? I haven’t tried it. You really don’t need it – the DIY version takes 2 minutes and is waaaay cheaper.
Final Tips from a Mum Who Tried It:
- Always use gentle baby soap. It’s safe even for face and eyes.
- Set up near the bathroom or outside for easy cleanup.
- Let your toddler help make the foam! My son loves using the mixer with me.
Foam play is toddler magic. It’s budget-friendly, screen-free, and gives you time to breathe. So go grab that shampoo and start whipping up some soap fun. And remember – it’s not about being perfect. It’s about the giggles, the mess, and the memories. 💙
