If you’ve ever wondered “How to make a dinosaur sensory bin?” or Googled “Dinosaur sensory activities for toddlers” in a last-ditch effort to save a rainy afternoon—you’re in good company.
My toddler has been dinosaur-hooked ever since we visited a dinosaur café in Korea. So of course, I decided to make him a preschool dinosaur sensory bin at home, thinking it would be an instant hit.
Spoiler alert: it kind of wasn’t.

Materials I Used: Natural Materials And Dinosaur Figurines
I went the almost all-natural route, I didn’t want to waste more rice. This is super cheap.
- stones we washed together in a stone washing station,

- real moss we collected on a walk, and other interesting things I found in nature.

- a few sprigs of rosemary I “borrowed” from my mums kitchen. It smells great.
- and of course, his favorite dinosaur sensory toys and figurines.

- We set it up in a clear flat sensory box (which I got from TEDI for 4€). Any flat container works.
He played with it for 15 minutes. Twice. So I had to make it more interesting. Here is what he really loved from the first version.
The stones. (Also, note to self: don’t do sensory play on a table unless you want to worry about holes in the floor.)

How to Make a Dinosaur Sensory Bin More Fun for 2-Year-Olds
So the bin needed a little remix. If you’re also making a dinosaur sensory bin for toddlers and your toddler gets bored fast, here are a few simple add-ons that worked for us:
💦 1. Add a Water Pool
My son is a water baby through and through. I added a little container of water to the bin as a “dino bath” or “lake,” and suddenly the dinosaurs needed to be washed, fed, and obviously it didn’t take long until he spilled it.

🍽️ 2. Feeding Station
I grabbed some pom-poms, spoons, and mini bowls from our play kitchen and made a little feeding station for the dinosaurs. My son played an extra 5 minutes with that.

Btw. Here are some more pom-pom activities your toddler might like?
🥚 3. DIY Play Dough Dinosaur Eggs
We made simple playdough eggs. Great for fine motor skills. He still plays with the eggs. And he liked rolling the eggs.

🕵️ 4. Hide-and-Seek
I buried tiny objects—buttons, shells, mini animals—for him to find. I wish I had some bones like this for a dinosaur dig.

Final Thoughts: Keep It Easy
This easy, fun DIY was a great way to connect with my toddler- honestly I had maybe more fun than my toddler— it didn’t play out exactly how I imagined. I think it was more about the process than the product.
If you’re planning your own DIY dinosaur sensory bin, here are a few takeaways:
- Prep it with your child: collecting stones and moss together was a huge hit. And he loved the cleanup.
- Don’t stress if they only play for a few minutes—I think I can reuse it a few times.
- Stay flexible: adding water, playdough, or tools can totally shift the play.
- Definitely do it on the floor, not a table. Not with stones.
In the end we had one really cute surprise. A little lady bug visited the sensory bin. My son was super happy.
